It’s always a pleasure to read not only what you write about but how you write it. The quality of your pen is incomparable, and this week you outdid yourself. What a delight! Happy Christmas and best wishes for 2026

Thank you Katherine for articulating winter in a way that feels both honest and generous. Your writing captures the relief that comes from no longer fighting the dark. What stayed with me most is the idea that craving seclusion isn’t antisocial—it’s seasonal.

One thought your piece stirred is how modern life often denies us permission to winter at all. Perhaps the fatigue many feel isn’t just about darkness, but about being asked to stay bright when the world itself is dimming.

This is beautiful: “I never realise how much I crave seclusion until no-one wants to come out to play.”

So beautifully written. It was an absolute joy to read the description of “basic bitch blue sky” and “colour stealing mizzle” both descriptions almost jump off the page as climactic characters! Truly a wonderful essay on this often maligned time of year and as a sometimes resident of this little island in the North Sea, your writing gave a very special warmth to the bleak mid winter days. Merry Christmas to you and yours.
